Steve Shea, CISC, Principal at Barney and Barney, San Diego was installed Tuesday as President of the Insurance Brokers and Agents of the West (IBA West) at the association’s annual meeting in San Diego.
“It’s going to be another year of challenges and opportunities for independent agents and brokers your membership in IBA West will be more valuable than ever,” began Shea in his remarks to members assembled for the annual meeting. Shea said the association's volunteer leaders are committed to “helping you prepare for constantly changing business and market challenges.”
“The 2012 Legislative and Regulatory agenda once again highlighted the need for IBA West member agents and brokers to be involved in the political process, both from a PAC funding and grassroots advocacy perspective.”
“As it has for the past 100 years, IBA West continues to provide legislative, regulatory, judicial and grassroots advocacy through a network of professional advocates and volunteer members, “ said Shea and directed members’ attention to the at-a-glance look at the 2011 annual report for details of these efforts, adding the complete report has been posted at www.ibawest.com.
Shea said that redistricting and the state’s first open primary will dramatically alert the current political process and IBA West intends to be there to educate the large new group of legislators on the “industry issues and your value to California insurance consumers.” Shea cited the California Health Benefits Exchange, growing pressure to eliminate workers’ comp reforms and department of insurance initiatives as brewing issues that could “trigger significant changes in the way agents and brokers do business and increase their operating costs.”
He called upon members to get involved, renew their membership and support IBA West’s political action funds. Finally he asked members to become personally involved when called upon to participate in IBA West grassroots political action efforts.
Shea told members about several new IBA West programs, Insurfest and Project CAP, the consumer agent web portal that has been developed at the national level by IIABA to drive personal lines business to members using the TrustedChoice brand. Next month, Project CAP will be rolling out a mobile phone application that will allow consumers to contact their agent, create a home inventory, document an accident and more.
Insurfest, a project of the newly created IBA West Emerging Leaders Committee, will take place in October combining the best insurance education, sales and leadership training, industry networking into one fun, social event.
IBA West has also implemented a new product to save members on their E&O insurance, said Shea. If members use the association’s programs they are eligible for a 20 percent credit on their regular membership dues. The credit, called “IBABucks” can be used for education class or IBA West Conference registrations.
In closing, Shea thanked members for their support and trust and invited them to become more involved in their association by using the insurance products, education resources and becoming politically active.
