Bruce Moore Passed Away

This week, IBA West and the insurance industry lost a great leader. Bruce N. Moore, Barney and Barney, San Diego, passed away peacefully on Tuesday of this week surrounded by his loving family.

Bruce Moore’s long and influential history with Barney & Barney began in 1950 when he joined the firm as a Property & Casualty producer. Five short years later he became an owner and remained one until his retirement in 1990. With his trademark handlebar moustache, Moore came to be the “Face of Barney & Barney.”

Bruce was a past president of IBA West in 1971 when the organization was known as the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of California. He received the association's prestigous Ramsden-Sullivan award in 1980.

IBA West President-elect Steve Shea, a principal at Barney & Barney, fondly remembers Moore.

"Bruce was my father's mentor here at Barney & Barney and the person who hired him back in 1968. My parents and 2 older brothers (I wasn't born yet) were set to move to Milwaukee, WI with a national insurance company.  House hunting trips and relocation arrangements were made, but the last minute offer for my Dad to join Barney & Barney kept us in Southern California where my parents ultimately raised their family.  For a variety of reasons, Bruce has had a huge impact on our family and I would not be where I am today, physically or professionally, without Bruce Moore. We are indebted to him as a family, a firm, and a city as a whole.  We are going to miss him."

Bruce served as a leader at his firm for the majority of his tenure and a pillar of the company, the insurance industry and most importantly the San Diego community. He has played an active role in some of San Diego’s largest and most influential organizations including: the Chamber of Commerce, Convention & Visitors Bureau, Rotary Club, San Diego County YMCA, Holiday Bowl and the Independent Insurance Agents Association of California, to name a few. In 1984, he was given the prestigious title of “Mr. San Diego” by the Downtown Rotary Club. To us, he’s “Mr. Barney & Barney

Bruce celebrated his 87th birthday this past Saturday.  Please keep the entire Moore family in your thoughts and prayers, including our own Jenny Rappold (Bruce’s daughter).  More information about a celebration of Bruce’s life will follow in the weeks ahead.
