WCAN Legislative Day: April 4-5

IBA West members are invited to participate in Workers' Compensation Action Network (WCAN)  2011 Workers' Compensation Legislative Education Day happening on April 4-5. This annula event is timely as we approach a critical juncture in workers' compensation policy and politics. Meetings with legislative offices are being set and WCAN is busy preparing for your arrival.

For those of you who haven't signed up yet, the event is only two short weeks away. Just consider these facts:

-- Workers' compensation costs per claim have shot up 60 percent since 2005

-- Medical treatment costs have increased by $500 million during the past five years

-- After a brief respite, California regained its standing in 2010 as one of the nation's most expensive states for workers' compensation coverage

-- The workers' compensation court system is being bogged down with more litigated claims and disputes in the form of liens, and injured workers' claims are taking to resolve

Numerous pieces of legislation have been proposed in Sacramento with the potential to impact these trends -- either posititvely or negatively. Legislative Day is an important opportunity for employers to tell lawmakers that an efficient, affordable workers' compensation system is vital for creating jobs and serving the needs of injured workers.
