Insurance Council for the City of Hope

Forty leaders in California's insurance industry joined together in 1978 to further a cause initiated by a few concerned citizens in 1913. These industry leaders recognized an opportunity to support their community to support their community and City of Hope through a series of events that would raise funds necessary to continue research and patient care programs at the City of Hope National Medical Center and Beckman Research Institute.

City of Hope champions breakthrough discoveries in cancer, diabetes, HIV/AIDS and a host of other life-threatening illnesses. Each member of the California Insurance Council endorses City of Hope's unique mission to not only heal the whole person physically, emotionally and spiritually, but also to consider the needs of the patient’s family through counseling and other support.

While providing support for this charitable enterprise, members of the California Insurance Council have the opportunity to attend monthly meetings with other prominent leaders in the insurance industry. Building on the power of their work, the California Insurance Council has inspired other groups in Seattle and Chicago.

The annual campaign to raise money for the research and treatment programs at City of Hope begins with a special Campaign Kick-Off Tour and Dinner at City of Hope's Duarte campus in early summer. A high profile annual golf tournament each September in Southern California soon follows, and the fundraising campaign culminates in the gala Spirit of Life Award Dinner each October. This final event honors an individual within the industry with City of Hope's highest and most prestigious award, The Spirit of Life.

To date, the California Insurance Council has raised more than $9 million for City of Hope, helping save the lives and restore the dreams of countless individuals touched by cancer and other life-threatening diseases.
