The YBA Committee awarded its most prestigious awards to two outstanding young agents for their contributions to the industry.

Joel Geddes III of Capax – Giddings, Corby, Hynes, Inc. in Modesto won the 2010 Harlan Miller Award for his outstanding dedication to the political grassroots program of the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America (IIABA).

Geddes participated in the IIABA National Legislative Conference and has attended in-district meetings with federal, state and local elected representatives.

Geddes is a long time leader of the association on a local, state and national level. He currently serves on the board of directors of the IIAB Stanislaus County Local Association. On a state level, Geddes has served on the IBA West Young Brokers & Agents Committee including chairman in 2007. During that year, Geddes organized the 2nd Annual YBA Political Summit. He has also served on the IBA West Strategic Planning Council and ISC Committee. He currently serves At Large Regional Director on the IBA West Board of Directors.

The award was named for Harlan Miller who served as president of the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of California, now IBA West, in 1985-1986, and of IIABA in 1994-1995, for his exemplary record of service to his community and his association. Harlan Miller Award recipients receive a $1,000 scholarship to offset expenses they incur participating in the IIABA Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C.

James Wood of DiBuduo & DeFendis Insurance Brokers, LLC in Fresno was awarded the Anthony J. “Cheech” DiBuduo Award in recognition of his outstanding service to his community and the industry.

Wood is currently serving his 3rd term as Vice President of the IBA Fresno local association and has been an active member of IBA West for six years. He attended the National Big “I” Legislative Conference in 2009 where he met with Senator Feinstein and Congressman Radonovich.

Wood's community service also includes serving as a committee member of a non-profit organization called the D&D Project which is a business partnership between DiBuduo & DeFendis Insurance Brokers, LLC, Zenith Insurance Company (Fresno), Pinedale Elementary School and Washington Union High School. This project works year-round to provide support, resources, volunteers and funds to both of these economically-challenged schools.

The YBA Committee noted this year's award recipient is an employee of DiBuduo & DeFendis Insurance Group, whose founder Anthony DiBuduo is namesake of the award. DiBuduo was a longtime business, industry and trade association leader at local, state and national levels. Throughout his distinguished career, DiBuduo was a champion and mentor of young agents and brokers. He also set a standard of unparalleled commitment to the political action programs of both IBA West and IIABA.

The DiBuduo Award includes a $2,500 stipend that the deserving young broker or agent may utilize as he or she sees fit to continue the good works recognized through the award.
